Universal Day of Peace (NY)
In 1984, the first Universal Peace Day was organized by Art For The People at a wonderful event in the Rambles of Central Park, New York City. At 7:15 PM, the exact moment of the Hiroshima bombing, a candle lighting ceremony took place. This was followed by Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary) singing to end a magical day. Over the years, artists, performers and speakers have participated in creating Universal Peace Day at different locations around New York City. Participants have included Pete Seeger, Richie Havens, Odetta, David Amram, John Hall, and Chief Jake Swamp of the Mohawk Nation, who planted a Tree for Peace.
